Waiting a week between dosage adjustments is done to evaluate effects and ensure no severe side effects develop. Patients who have impaired kidney function can still buy Oxcarbazepine, but treatment should start at half the usual dose and will likely be increased slower.

Treatment may continue for as long as it provides benefit.

Preventing Bipolar Mania

Oxcarbazepine use in this respect is typically reserved for when other medications, such as lithium, are not working. Oxcarbazepine works about as well as lithium, so if lithium or similar medications are working well there's nothing to be gained from switching to Oxcarbazepine.
